Creative ideas and tips for turning neglected corners into eye-catchers
Successful interior design utilizes the available space, creating an “entity” that suits the needs of the occupants of the home, transforming even the smallest spaces into highly “efficient”, meaning more practical or functional. However, even well-designed homes often have dead spaces. Such as: Living room corners, bedroom alcoves, and even “bare” walls. With a little thought and careful planning, any of these “dead” spaces can be designed to add to a home’s functionality, needs, or visual aesthetics.
Prioritize storage
Wall shelves loaded with books and accessories
Turn unused space into functionality by utilizing it for storage. You can install shelves for books or decorative accessories or design cabinets to keep some of your things out of sight. If you go with this idea, make sure the area looks neat and organized and doesn’t turn into a cluttered corner.
Add a mirror
Mirror in the corner, living room
If the “dead” area is dark and lacks natural light, add a mirror to it, making it bright and giving the illusion that the space is larger than it actually is.
Color the place
Bring the unused space to life and make it stand out by employing some color by painting the walls and buying rugs, pillows, artwork, and other types of décor.
Practical exploitation
Home office
Consider utilizing the neglected space, furnishing it with some great decorative pieces, turning the space into a fun play area for your kids, or adding a home office, which includes a small office table, a stylish and comfortable chair or armchair, lighting, and some artwork or shelves.
Reading corner
The reading corner is classically furnished
A great way to utilize an empty corner in any room is to make it a reading nook, if someone in the house loves books. To implement the idea, without spending a lot of money, you can buy a rug or carpet to cover the floor, some soft floor cushions, and hang a small bookshelf. To make the corner more attractive, you can buy a reading chair and place it in front of the bookshelf and add a side table, a lamp and plants.
Use wallpaper
Attractive patterned wallpaper
Sometimes the dead space in a room can be a blank wall. To bring the latter back to life, wallpaper can be installed, completely transforming the room’s décor and creating the right atmosphere. For example: A rich velvet or silk wallpaper can transform an ordinary room into a luxurious and elegant one. Patterned wallpaper, in turn, creates a lively atmosphere.
Designing a breakfast nook
Modern kitchen; looks like a breakfast nook
An empty alcove in the kitchen is a great space to perhaps design a breakfast nook in the kitchen. Add a small table and two chairs if space permits. In a smaller space, you can install a drop-down table and coordinate a couple of painted wooden stools for a quirky touch. The corner will also be a great place to prepare meals.
