What is Epoxy Resin?

Epoxy resin contains epoxides (highly reactive groups of molecules), which solidify (or harden) through chemical reactions. The latter occurs, either by combining groups of molecules with other substances, or by heating them at a high temperature. This is the process by which epoxy becomes “cross-linked,” as the polymer strands form into a rigid structure.
There are two main types of epoxy:
- A heat-cured epoxy used in many industrial applications, including electronic components, medical devices, infrared telescopes, and missile warning systems. It has several properties, including Flexibility.
- A two-part epoxy, where the two components needed to create the chemical reaction are packaged separately. When the resin is mixed with the hardener, the result, within 24 hours, will go from a thick liquid to a paste, and eventually a fully cured and hardened material. To remove the epoxy after it dries, you will need to scrape it off, i.e. soften it with medical alcohol, or paint thinner if necessary. Two-part epoxy, in turn, has many industrial uses: Automobiles, boats, and construction projects, with applications including attaching countertops to pedestals, bonding concrete elements to concrete, stone, or metal, and holding decorative moldings in place.
